Virtual Ability International Disability Rights Affirmation Conference 2013
"LET ME IN"
8.30 am to 6.30 pm PDT Friday 27th September 2013
6.00 am to 6.30 pm PDT Saturday 28th September 2013
___________________
The third annual International
Disability Rights Affirmation Conference, sponsored by Virtual Ability, Inc.,
will be held this week on Friday, September 27th and Saturday, 28th September
2013. This year's theme is "LET ME IN.” The sixteen conference sessions
highlight diverse perspectives on accessibility and accessibility legislation
from around the world.
Alice Krueger, president of
Virtual Ability, Inc., states: “For persons with disabilities, access to
information is critical. We must be included in research about the world, and
our needs must be considered in policy development. We also should have access
to buildings, transportation, and all the other resources used by persons who
do not have disabilities. Having access to the full function of communities in
which we engage is equally important. “Let me in” is a logical follow-up to
last year’s IDRAC conference which focused on communities people with
disabilities belong to.”
All sessions will take place
at The Sojourner Auditorium on Virtual Ability Island within Second Life .
An impressive list of
speakers has been brought together for the Conference, including Keynote
Speakers, Dr. Leticia De León and Dr John Stone.
Dr Leticia De Leon is an
Associate Professor at the University of Texas – Pan American. She teaches in a
teacher preparation program that certifies early childhood, bilingual, and
special education elementary teachers.
Dr. John Stone is the
Director of the Center for International Rehabilitation Research Information
and Exchange (CIRRIE) at the State University of New York at Buffalo.
The full times and details
of events and the speakers can be found at blog.virtualability.org together
with information about the Organisation and its works.
This year, in the spirit of
access, the Conference will also be broadcast live onto the Web. The live
broadcast is at www.livestream.com/metaversetvbusiness together
with a facility for text chat during the events. If you wish to embed the
broadcast into your own site, there is an embed code on that page for that
purpose.
Pearl Island on 27th September 2013 from 7am slt onwards and we will be here eating virtual cake, drinking virtual coffee, chatting, texting, dancing, listening to our djs and live music...We will be around all weekend...
and you won:t even have to get out of bed
Of course you can come at any time at all, we have various projects running here... predominantly The Gerry Blache Project. This is what the Macmillan Organisation says about the Coffee Morning:
"
About Coffee Morning
What's the World's Biggest Coffee Morning about?
The World's Biggest Coffee Morning is Macmillan Cancer Support's biggest fundraising event. We ask people across the UK - and sometimes further afield - to hold a coffee morning, where donations on the day are made to Macmillan. In 2012 115,000 people signed up to coffee morning, raising a record £15 million.
This year we want to raise even more money to help change the lives of people affected by cancer. Find out about how Macmillan helps.
How did it start?
The event started in 1990, when a local fundraising committee decided to hold a coffee morning where people came along to meet and mingle - as they might ordinarily do - but donate the cost of their coffee to Macmillan in the process.
The idea seemed such a simple, yet effective one that they suggested the model be taken up nationally. The first National World’s Biggest Coffee Morning was in 1991, when 2,600 people registered to hold coffee mornings across the country. Since then it has raised over £75 million in total for Macmillan Cancer Support.
We hope you’ll get together with friends, family and colleagues on Friday 27 September and make time for what really matters."
You will be able to buy virtual cakes, tell your stories talk to each other and us if you want to ... donate straight to the website or via our collection box on the sim. The amount is recorded there and will be donated to the Macmillan fund at the end of the weekend where we have registered our team and site.
We are encouraging newbies to turn up also so don't worry about that...
Looking forward to seeing you xxxx

YAWNING, STRETCHING & TRYING TO THINK
Maxim for the day: No good deed goes unpunished...Clare Boothe Luce.
The Library
BELIEVE IT OR NOT THE SIMS ARE STILL OPEN AT SL10B. This is your opportunity to pursue the noble art of stuffing as many freebies down the front of your shirt as is avatarly possible.
Yes,AND you can go to our parcel on Stunning and also get Freebies. Despite the misleading box at the entrance, there are boxes of fun all over the build from deep in the sea to up in the clouds. Just click the yellow pole for directions! heheheh
Or of course you can just sit in a rubber ring and watch avatar tv, whilst exercising your leg muscles.
Seriously, please go and look at the sims! There are masses of them all waiting for your kind gaze and your photos and your blogs.
There have been brilliant events on, but now it has quietened down, and the sims are much easier to walk or ride around. It is a mark of true excitement when the Exhibition Assistants are still on the sims, because they want to be.
Enormous amounts of hard work have gone into the creation of these beloved builds and it is really worth seeing them. Take photos, play on them, hang out, collect freebies, hunt, dig, sail, marvel, see who is doing what, ride... it goes on at length at all you can do. There is music streaming on every parcel, media installations, works of incredibly complicated art, loving welcomes and laughs and peace and beauty.
We are really enjoying our own and the other exhibits on SL10B Stunning. Fortuitously we put in a swimball and are able to swim all over the sim. Foxxe Wilder donned her mermaid outfit and has been undulating through the reefs and hidden depths of the Stunning builds! Every so often we cast fish food on the waters for her. So far ignored.
Metaverse TV would have written again earlier to our previous blogs but we have been filming rl/virtual 'stuff' out there in the wider virtual platforms, coming back in to SL10B to let off a bit of steam and relax. We spent the morning (gmt) at SL10B Astonish.
Breakfast or Bedtime, still dancing.
Now we admit we looked a bit of a ... well judge for yourselves...
but surely that is the point .. the past and the future but we noticed that suddenly we weren't in the central auditorium any more, whilst still being able to hear the gorgeous ancient resident DJ Wilde spinning ..( a great way to start the day and she gave us coffee).
At first we thought we must have double clicked somehow, but then heard a kind of splutter from our host of the day, the fab Callie del Boa. Nah, it wasnt Callie. Yes, we admit we did check, sorry Callie, lol. Interestingly, it was one of the SL Mods who had given us a bit of a bump! She was very strong btw! Definitely been eating her spinach.
We should talk about the scriptless machine demo by Chaos Energy. It was fun and intriguing. Now our description of these machines is possibly not Chaos Energy's. We went over yesterday for a bit of R & R. There was a clownish walker, cogs and chains and a caterpillar, an executive toy and a swinging seat. All in perpetual motion and no scripts. All physical. Contact him for a looksee.
There are more people walking all the sims now and still masses of people at the events, enthusiasm is high and happy. Tomorrow we will be holding a PG PJ PARTY from 1pm onwards, still trying to find PG PJs.
Have a great time, and if you are visiting us on Stunning, don't just look and wonder what is that! Head for the X marking the spot and click.
It's a Bedtime Stories {PG} Pajama PARTY!!! Come party with Metaverse TV in your jammies! Friday 2pm SLT until... Whenever Join us at the SL10B Exhibit & Let's have some fun!!! http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/SL10B%20Stunning/32/244/24
Try the adventure playground and get some gifts too ! Looking forward to seeing you all there xoxoxo
SL10B opened last night/afternoon/today. Cross out n/a.
You could barely
see the world map for green dots. This was how it should be and very
traditional for the SL Birthday celebrations. Plus the crashing that was
involved. it was a celebration of the dodgem track that is the Second Life large
event
Metaverse TV decided to go for the newbie look for Opening Night. !Spoiler Alert!: Look Away now if bare feet offend you.
The above is the redoubtable Dousa Dragonash, COO of Metaverse TV. Robustus Hax, our CEO was immortalised in the first video he ever filmed, a vid to beat, even in those early days. If you want to see more of that go to the Ssssh O O the water is warm! Metaverse TVs Adventure Playground on SL10B Stunning.
. The live events were completely packed. This is a tribute to the hard work that the live musicians in Second Life have put in over the years. Metaverse TV in the shape of Dousa, Baird Barnard and Ona Waffle and latterly Foxxe Wilder, yes the Rocker herself, swam over to the extraordinary Lake Auditorium and caught Wolfie and the NightStalkers with a cracking set of rock and anthemic songs. We were so knocked out by this gig. Absolutely a must to catch. But you probably all know that. Before the band, was Shannon O'Herlihy with her beautiful acoustic set and gorgeous voice, singing festival favourites.
SL10B is worth every minute for seeing these live acts. You don't have to chase all over the world... These central performance areas are filled to bursting with a reputed 400 plus acts having booked in for the next week.
Brilliant Performance Build at SL10B Captivate
We wandered around this a.m. when one of the larger continents had partied themselves silly and it was a dream of being in the Funfair after closing ... The stalwart Southern Hemisphere and those on the eastern continents, who weren't actively out at work, had a seemingly secret elvish party and took the pre-breakfast opportunity of a lag free stroll to the great music being streamed inworld.
An unexpected ride, goes with my hair
Spotting a cadillac and retro hoardings, we headed for ..Elvis .Dinosaur Mayhem.. and sat in a ride that matched our prim hair. What happened next was not what we thought would happen and we won't say it here. (Spoiler) Suffice to say, I had to see who was the creator and all circles met ... it was Rakolnikow Roffo, of Lollygaggers, that extraordinary avatar whose very early interview with Dousa Dragonash in Out and About we have actually running on our parcel down at Stunning right at this moment. We see he has not put down his famous puddles! Anyway go and indulge your inner child at http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/SL10B%20Electrify/153/104/23 (Note:We did mishear "I ain't going honkytonking any more" for "I ain't going home to Taunton anymore".)
Another Note: This is the first place where we have not had moanings about our avatar. You can come looking as newbie as is unhumanly possible.......... AND get compliments!!!
As
you may be able to see we have been busy sorting out SL10B. Well not all of it, there are a couple of other people who are doing that. We sorted out our parcel.... Ssssh...O O the water is warm! on the SL10B Stunning sim
The reason is
that it is Second Life's 10th Birthday. Hands up, apart from Philip Rosedale, who has been here ten years and can we have you on our sim?
We are like the USA. Not quite as old as we could be.
This year there is a bit of a
difference. You can't have events apparently on your parcel you would
have to book a space. Well we didnt get a space that we could stay up to
utilise, so we have decided that as we can have a party on our parcel,
we will be doing that instead... It will be a
PG PJ PARTY with music and the rest of what we do so well. We would
like you all to pop along. Basically the party will be whenever you turn
up :-)) but particularly on Friday 21st from 2pm slt onwards. In the
meantime, to keep in the party spirit we have built an Adventure
Playground, and we are showing our live stream there together with our
archived stream and some fun freebies. SL birthdays are usually our time for adolescent behaviour
Come and see some of the valued creators of Second Life
and what they used to do, in Out and About, the panels of discussions
from MBC News and predictions so old we wonder if they did come true! or whether they have come and gone... there will be programmes added all week
So basically come along in your PJs and have an exploration, we will be
there and there is a mass of beautiful builds to see. In the short time
I have had so far to look at the builds I would head for the water sims
and not just because we are there but because some of the more unusual
builds are there. There is also a fabulous museum set up for the
distribution of the lost and lamented Arcadia Asylum where you can grab
all the freebies your heart desires back on the terra sims. Best present
ever is the little train that dissolves into a pod and takes you around
all the sims courtesy of the talented and EXTREMELY PATIENT Yavanna
Llanfair, so you dont even have to press a button. It was no mean feat
to repeat the answers to the same questions for the last 3 weeks I
think. I couldnt have done it that is for sure. You were brilliant
Yavanna and lovely to work with ... thank you. And the lovely volunteer EAs and Inspectors who had so much fun discovering our build .... we thank you for the giggles. And let us NOT forget the naughty and ever highness KT Syakumi who blessed us with a drowned newbie on our pristine parcel. We treated it with honour and then its spirit dissipated into the air at some point .. not us KT promise. We had planned to incorporate him into our build as an unfortunate past employee of Metaverse TV. It alas was not to be.
OO and dont forget the elephants. Never forget the elephants!
Bloggers have been wandering the sims for the past day or so, so you
will see loads of writing about it. BUT this year as last year a group
from the residential community got together to put this on. If you didnt
get a parcel, dont worry, Linden Labs have dedicated part of the
Destination Guide to events and are asking for events from all over. So
if you are having a special gig at your place try to get it in there.
All in All, have a great time ... It's ten years. The Theme is LOOKING
FORWARD LOOKING BACK. We had a little discussion about that .. something
about a saying about one foot in the future and one in the past ......
if you know it you will know the rest. If not we have included the clue
in the build hahahahahahahahahaha xx
Come visit our exhibit! hey that rhymes!
Now let's get with the times
And also go back!
Up and Down
Round and round
find the gifts and
have some fun!
Opening Sunday June 16th. Meet the Metaverse staff and see them
as they were in the beginning, now and to the future we go!
